Overview

One of the most important things you can do on the Remesh platform is to ask interesting, insightful questions. You can find an overview of our question types below, each linked to a more in depth description. Please note that Remesh is completely text-based, so all questions will be typed.

Video Overview

Item Type Descriptions

Onboarding Polls

• Mandatory questions asked before the session begins and are typically used to collect demographic information. Onboarding Polls can be single or multi select.
• Best for collecting audience demographic information which can be used to segment data.
• Example: What is your gender? 
• Recommended Duration (Remesh Live): Onboarding polls do not have a duration associated, they are filled out before the conversation starts

Polls

• Polls allow participants to select the response or responses that they most closely align with.
• Best for collecting quantitative insights, often used in conjunction with Ask Opinion questions.
• Example:
  • What do you think of this idea?
    • Love it
    • Like it
    • Dislike it
    • Hate it
• Recommended Duration (Remesh Live): 30 seconds

Ask Opinion

• Open end questions that leverage our proprietary algorithm to organize and analyze responses. Participants submit their response in their own words, then vote on other participants' responses.
• Best for getting the “why” behind participants’ thoughts and opinions.
• Example: What do you like about the idea you just read about?
• Recommended Duration (Remesh Live): 2 minutes
  • Note: In Live sessions, participants have the first 80% of the Ask Opinion time to respond. If they don't respond in that time, their responses will be automatically submitted. The participants will then move to voting exercises.

Ask Experience

• Captures open-end responses with the option to program categories that participants would self-select.
• Best for asking participants to share personal experiences.
• Example: Talk about the last time you invested time in something that felt meaningful.
• Recommended Duration (Remesh Live): 1 minutes

Branching

• Break participants into groups based upon how they responded to a poll to ask a targeted follow up Ask Opinion question.
• Best for gathering targeted feedback from a specific segment of participants.
• Example:
  • Those who selected Love it or Like it in a poll
    • What specifically did you enjoy about the video?
  • Those who selected Dislike it or Hate it in a poll
    • What could have changed in the video to make you feel more positively towards it?
• Recommended Duration (Remesh Live): 2 minutes

Ranking

• Ranking questions allow participants to rank between 3+ options based upon preference.
• Best for comparing and organizing a list of items in preference order. 
• Example: Please rank the following activities in order of most likely to enjoy it to least likely to enjoy.
• Recommended Duration (Remesh Live): 1 minutes. Consider increasing duration if more than 6 options are included.

Videos and Images

• Videos and Images allow you to send visuals to your participants to react to.
• Best for sharing visual aspects of what you are testing including products, advertising, an introduction message and more.
• Recommended Duration (Remesh Live)
  • Videos: Length of video
  • Images: 20 seconds, more if text-heavy

Speaks

• Speaks are what Remesh calls text that is sent to participants. Participants do not respond directly to these messages.
• Best for sharing instructions and giving the discussion guide a flow and conversational feel.
• Example: In the next few minutes, I’m going to show you a series of images and ask a few questions. You can click the image to enlarge it!
• Recommended Duration (Remesh Live): 15 seconds, more if text-heavy

Best Practices

Remember that all participants will be asked to respond to each question you send to the group. When asking probing questions, try not to be too pointed or to direct questions to one specific segment of the participants. You want to make sure everyone feels like they can respond to the questions appropriately.

Be detailed and direct in how you ask questions, but try not to dictate how participants should respond. Remember that the participants are humans, so providing lengthy 'instructions' for how to respond to each question may be confusing and lead to lower quality responses.

Use a Poll then an Ask if you need to ask two related questions. This way, you can segment the response to the Ask based on how the participants answered the previous Poll

• Can polls have free text response options?
  No, at the moment Poll questions are limited to a closed-set of predefined responses.
